I am a licensed
professional counselor and registered art therapist in Boulder Colorado
serving the Boulder/Denver/Longmont areas. I have worked in the mental
health field for over 20 years and have had the privilege to work with
and learn from a variety of people suffering from and moving
courageously through different life struggles. My experience includes
work in various psychiatric facilities, a prison, a home for abused
children, a residential home for the developmentally disabled, nursing
homes and Hospice. I am the assistant coordinator and core faculty
member of the art therapy program at The Naropa University, where
I teach classes in child development, professional ethics, master's
paper and counseling relationships. For the past 8 years I have enjoyed
a private practice where my focus is mostly on women's and children's
issues which includes self esteem and empowerment issues, grief and
loss, life transitions, trauma, relationship and intimacy issues,
creative blocks, spiritual growth and discernment. I love working with
groups and families. I have a particular interest in helping families
to find ways to communicate and find lasting enjoyment together through
art and play. I continue to be dedicated to the art making process for
my own personal nourishment and growth.
Therapeutic Approach....
My approach to therapy is rooted in Transpersonal Psychology where the whole of the person (physical, mental and spiritual) is considered. Finding inner strength and wisdom in oneself forms the foundation of my work with clients. The approach is about trusting the human potential and the creative spirit and believing that one has the ability to change and re-create oneself in the present. I believe inherent wisdom resides in everyone and that one only needs to trust in their own creative potential and drive toward wholeness and joyful living to find health. Through the unfolding of ones creativity, insights about ones self are realized.
Education..... I received my master’s degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Art Therapy from The Naropa University in Boulder in 1995. My undergraduate work was in Studio Art and Art Education at the University of Kentucky where I received my BA in 1981. As an artist myself, I understand the healing potential and satisfaction that the art making process brings. Engaging in the art process time and time again has proven to me the precious nature of the immediate moment, the interconnectedness of all things, and acceptance for the things I can not control. Trusting in the process without force brings about unlimited possibilites, a myriad of colors, shapes and forms on an ever expanding, unbound canvas. All I have to do is show up.
